It read: "The way Marcus Rashford is being treated is absolutely disgusting. It's cruel. It's abuse."

To which the 26-year-old responded by posting: "I appreciate your support! It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough."

The 60-cap England international has been targeted by a number of United fan accounts this season.

Firstly after he headed to Belfast for a night out before withdrawing from a training session the following day - leading him to miss the FA Cup clash with Newport - while some have taken exception to his inconsistent form.

Rashford was even booed by a section of the club's fanbase when he was taken off during the FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry.

United's academy graduate has struggled to replicate his dazzling form from last season where he directly contributed to 40 goals to fire his side into the top four.

In contrast, he has chipped in with eight goals and five assists from 40 games in all competitions this campaign.

Just two of those strikes have come in his last ten Premier League outings with United poised to miss out on Champions League qualification.

Erik ten Hag's side sit sixth in the table - 13 points off fourth-placed Aston Villa with five games to play.

It's not the first time Rashford has defended himself this term, having slammed his critics questioning his commitment to the club.

Roy Keane says Marcus Rashford needs an 'old-fashioned kick up the a***' when asked about his future at Manchester United

Writing in the Players' Tribune, he said: "When I make a mistake, I’ll be the first one to put my hand up and say that I need to do better.

"But if you ever question my commitment to Man United, that’s when I have to speak up.

"It’s like somebody questioning my entire identity, and everything I stand for as a man.

"I grew up here. I have played for this club since I was a boy. My family turned down life-changing money when I was a kid so I could wear this badge."

Before adding: "I can take any criticism. I can take any headline. From podcasts, social media and the papers. I can take it.

"But if you start questioning my commitment to this club and my love for football and bringing my family into it, then I’d simply ask you to have a bit more humanity."
