Ben White has taken centre stage for Arsenal recently, and his actions may well have been inspired by his footballing hero.

The full-back scored twice as the Gunners battered Chelsea 5-0, before his devious behaviour played a huge part in two of the goals in their north London derby win over Tottenham.

Having netted crucial goals and shown his willingness to use the dark arts to help his team to victory, White's inspiration in the sport will come as little surprise to fans.

The 26-year-old revealed in 2021 that the player he looks up to the most is none other than Spain and Real Madrid icon Sergio Ramos.

When asked to name his favourite ever footballers in an interview with Arsenal's official website, he started with the defender: “For me, in my position, I think, Sergio Ramos is unbelievable.

“The goals he’s scored over the years, and the standards that he’s kept throughout the years that he’s been playing is unbelievable and something that I would like to achieve.”

What is more surprising however, is that the Spaniard himself is a long-time admirer of the former Brighton man.

According to Leeds United's former sporting director Victor Orta, the current Sevilla man first spotted White's potential whilst he was on loan at Newport County in League Two, during the 2017/18 season.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show in 2021, Orta reflected on Leeds' decision to bring the defender to Elland Road for 2019, revealing that Ramos had a hand in the move.

He said: "Ben White didn't play one game in the Championship before [joining Leeds].

"The loan at Newport was really good and we started to monitor [him] because we were watching. To be honest, I felt impressed.

"I remember in the first moment Sergio Ramos said, ‘Who is this kid playing in the [back] line of Newport?’, and was really impressed."

The World Cup winner had likely seen White in action in Newport's FA Cup tie against Tottenham that year, where he delivered an impressive performance in a 1-1 draw.

The then 20-year-old managed to keep current Bayern Munich Harry Kane star quiet for all of 82 minutes, before he netted an equaliser to force a fourth round replay, which Spurs ultimately won 2-0.

And Ramos has clearly been proven right in his assessment of the reluctant England international, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise since his playing days in Wales.

After joining Arsenal in 2021, following subsequent loan spells at Peterborough and Leeds, White has established himself as a key member of Mikel Arteta's side who are bidding for a first Premier League title in twenty years.

And he has clearly made it his mission to emulate the World Cup winner's knack for scoring huge goals, as well as his notorious win-at-all-costs mentality.

Ramos' influence on the Englishman's game was never more apparent than in his team's opening goal against Spurs.

White appeared to try and take opposing goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario's glove off moments before the corner which led to Arsenal's opening goal was delivered, completely unsettling the Italian stopper.

The Gunners fan favourite has even managed to enjoy a similar career progression since changing position as the former Madrid captain.

Having initially signed as a promising centre-back, he has been converted to a right-back under Arteta, a move which has proved successful, with White a mainstay in the starting line up ever since.

Ramos meanwhile began as full-back, before switching a central defensive role, where he then went on to be regarded as one of the best in the world in the position.

And White will be hoping a similarly trophy-laden career to his idol is soon to follow for him too, having followed the modern-day great step-by-step so far.
