Newport County 1-2 Tranmere Rovers: Rob Apter double claims Rovers win

Just a point separates Newport in 16th and Tranmere in the League Two table

Tranmere Rovers came from behind to hand Newport County a sixth successive defeat in League Two.

The hosts had led when Will Evans headed in Harrison Bright's cross at the back post.

Rob Apter levelled within five minutes, bursting through the middle to beat Nick Townsend with a low shot.

The midfielder's second followed before half-time as Tranmere broke quickly, collecting a pass from Harvey Saunders before shooting home left-footed.

Newport manager Graham Coughlan:

"We're a tired team, same as the past five or six games. We're a team that's on our knees, a team that's running out of energy, running out of legs, running out of ideas.

"We don't have the leaders that we need on the pitch to help the young ones through.

"We give up a couple of chances and we get punished, so everything that can go wrong is going wrong. That's not a true reflection of us as staff and as players, or supporters of this football club."

In August, we were fearing the upcoming season with dread. We have over achieved big time, but we survived. Please let's see what happens over the Summer and look with optimism for next season. I think Coughlan has done well under the circumstances. UTC

Well said, I don't think he will be the manager next year but not because of the job he has done this season, I just don't think he is a Hew Jenkins type of manager.

but have no doubt GC has earner his salary this year and dont a good job with limited resources

Being honest this season the manager has done a pretty good job, The entire defence out, clark, delaney, Drysdale, benno, mcgloghlin, payne, lewis all out injured.

If you know football, you know you can't win games with that many players out

Bright is 21 years old now and being honest isnt good enough. However the two academy boys Sanca and Norris did well today when they came on.

End of season games for teams going nowhere few more to come for both teams. Fans for both teams can look forward to another load of one year contract freebies and the season starts again…….unless for Rovers someone buys out the Palios’s and invest in the playing squad with a bit of class coming in. We live in hope.

Inconsistency has cost Rovers this season. Win one lose two. Apter though has been one of the few positives.

Coughlan gives the same mantra about tiredness. For a home performance that was poor. Tranmere had injuries just the same as Newport

Tranmeres season summed up consistent at being inconsistent, some great results against the top teams and some poor ones against the bottom ones, roll on next season.

Am really not sure if any football manager at any level can survive six consecutive defeats, so Newport chairman Huw Jenkins has an immediate decision to make. While admitting injuries have taken a heavy toll, this is a results business and boss Coughlan has lost his way.

I disagree with GC being sacked based on this season he has done a good job with limited resources.

However at the end of the season if Hew Jenkins decide to change from a rescue manager to promotion and development manager i get that.

Newport will never play nice football or go up the football pyramid with GC as manager.
